Meat Tomatoes

Meat Tomatoes

Meat tomatoes (Beefsteak Tomato, Globe Tomato) are the most commonly cultivated tomato varieties. Like all other tomato varieties, they belong to the nightshade family and are actually berries and not vegetables. Local meat tomatoes are offered by us approximately from June to October. The meat tomato is, as its name suggests, a large and very fleshy tomato with thick fruit walls and few seeds. Meat tomatoes are less juicy than the smaller tomatoes. They also have a larger number of fruit chambers, which makes their flesh firmer. Meat tomatoes are slightly sweet in taste and have less acidity than other tomato varieties. Like all other tomatoes, meat tomatoes should never be kept in the refrigerator. This causes them to lose taste and their shelf life is reduced. If properly stored, a tomato can be kept for up to 2 weeks. Meat tomatoes are particularly suitable for filling because of their size and firm texture. Meat tomatoes are also very popular in salads and raw vegetables because of their mild taste. They are also very suitable for grilling and gratinating as well as for sauces and ragouts.
