Hamburg Recipes

The typical Hamburg cuisine consists of hearty home cooking. Simple dishes are also served with fruit, sweet or sour side dishes. Hamburg is a port city and therefore a lot of fish is eaten, which can be bought there freshly caught. Labskaus is probably the most famous Hamburg dish. At first glance, it may look a bit strange, but it tastes very good due to the hearty ingredients. Originally, Labskaus is an old seafaring dish, since salted meat and other ingredients were long-lasting and did not spoil even on long sea voyages. The name Labskaus comes from the English "lobs-cou( r )se" - a menu for "coarse" men. The combination of pears, beans and bacon may also sound strange if you think of sweet, juicy fruits when you think of pears. But for the dish, small, rock-hard August pears are usually used, which first have to be softened. They can also be replaced by a hearty firm pear variety. Rundstück warm is a popular and typical leftover food, which is usually eaten on Monday evenings. All you need are leftovers from Sunday roast pork, sauce and the typical "round pieces" from Hamburg, which are normal wheat rolls in round form, without a slot. The round pieces have been baked in this way in Hamburg since 1623.
